Week 11 2020 Product Spotlight - 2055 (687.55) Universal Joint
Universal Joints are a common sight when it comes to Propshafts and are easily identifiable by many people in the automotive trade. However, if you’re someone who has limited experience with Propshafts, let alone the individual components, sometimes it can feel like you’re fumbling around in the dark. Universal Joints comprise of two elements: the journal (the center cross piece) and the bearing caps. A lot of universal joints will include a greasing point, but some will be pre-filled with grease and sealed so that re-greasing isn’t necessary.
When measuring a universal joint, it’s important that the caps are on and pressed in by hand. From there you can use your caliper to measure the outside diameter of one of the caps and the span of the joint over opposite caps. Once identified, it’s important your replacement has the same greasing application as the original unit.
This week’s product spotlight is the 2055 Universal Joint, which measures 57mm on the cap and 152mm on the span and can be found on many modern truck applications including Volvo, DAF, Iveco and Renault. We have several options including Genuine OEM product, Premium branded aftermarket and economy aftermarket options. Scania Interaxle Propshafts (or “Bogie Propshafts”) are found on Scania tippers between the two back driven axles. It is quite common for these to fail due to the amount of stress they are under, so we quite often see these props in pretty bad shape.
